PLANNING DOCUMENT FOR DIPEX INTERNATIONAL CHRONIC ILLNESS SPECIAL ISSUE
AND
MEETING AT PRATO, ITALY, SEPTEMBER, 2011
Special Issue Chronic Illness
We are seeking abstracts (300 words) from those of you who would like to participate in these activities. The purpose of submitting an abstract is so we can send a proposal to the editor of Chronic Illness, Chris Dowrick. Renata has had preliminary discussions with Chris, who is very interested in publishing a Special Issue of our DIPEx-related work. Final confirmation of this will be on receipt of our proposal.
Please include in your abstract:
1.    Title
2.    Lead author and co-authors
3.    Address for correspondence for lead author
The deadline is: 31st January, 2011
Submit your abstract to Renata Kokanovic (renata.kokanovic@monash.edu.au).
Overarching theme of the Special Issue: “Emotional responses to living with a long term condition”. Bear in mind we are writing for a journal of chronic illness. So far, the conditions under consideration are depression, heart failure, hypertension and motor neurone disease.
Renata and Sue Ziebland will write the Editorial for the Special Issue. In the Editorial the DIPEx methodology will be explained. Therefore, your manuscript need only have a brief section on the DIPEx method.
Renata will send journal guidelines outlining instructions for the Special Issue. A complete draft of your paper (approx. 5000 words) should be ready by 1st August, 2011 and submitted to Renata and Lorraine. Each draft will be reviewed by 3 people from the group (Renata and Lorraine will distribute these). Comments should be sent back to authors by 20th September, 2011. Following the workshopping of the papers at Prato authors will then be able to finalise their manuscript and submit to Chronic Illness for external review.
The deadline for submission of the finalised manuscripts to Chronic Illness will be 30 November, 2011. Papers will need to meet the usual standards for publication in international high quality journals and will be sent for external review by the journal editor.
Prato Researchers’ Meeting
The researchers’ meeting at the Monash Prato Centre (Monash University campus) in Prato, Italy, will take place between 26-28 September, 2011. It is proposed that two of these days will be spent on presentations of the work relating to the draft manuscripts and subsequent workshopping of the papers. The third day may be set aside for a DIPEx International group meeting – however this is yet to be confirmed. We will discuss this possibility with Graham Shaw. This day could also be used to discuss potential international collaborations and granting opportunities, data sharing, secondary analysis etc.
  Research Meeting details
The Conference Centre has been booked. Here is the link to the website: http://www.ita.monash.edu/. You will need to make your own arrangements for travel to Prato and accommodation. Suggestions for accommodation can be found on the website link.
There is no registration fee, but details re costs for catering and a small contribution to the conference venue hire will be sent to you soon (probably next week). Catering is expensive (especially for small groups) so if you would prefer to ‘self cater’ (eg. go out for lunch) please let us know and we can make a decision one way or the other.
As this meeting is only 3 days long we suggest you arrive in Prato the day before (Sunday 25th September) so you are fresh for a stimulating few days of work.
Any correspondence please send to both Renata (renata.kokanovic@monash.edu.au) andLorraine (lorraine.smith@sydney.edu.au), your friendly organising committee!! J
Kind regards,
Renata and Lorraine
